HSK 3.0 rolled out worldwide in July 2026. If you're preparing any HSK level right now, the system you've been studying against has just been replaced, not tweaked at the margins, replaced.
From 6 to 9 levels
The new framework splits Chinese proficiency into three stages of three levels: Elementary (1 to 3), Intermediate (4 to 6) and Advanced (7 to 9). Total vocabulary jumps from about 5,000 words across the old 6 levels to about 11,000 words across the new 9 levels.
Harder at every step
Vocabulary requirements grew by 44 % to 120 % depending on level. The new HSK 3 asks for roughly 1,000 to 1,200 words, close to the old HSK 4. Handwriting is now tested from level 2, speaking becomes mandatory from level 3, and translation appears as a full section from level 7.
