Reading your first book in Chinese: an honest guide
The best graded readers by HSK level and the 95% rule to pick a book that doesn't crush you.
Reading your first Chinese story without a dictionary (or almost) is a huge unlock. Good news: you can get there much sooner than you think, from HSK 2 or 3. You just need to pick the right book.
Don't tackle a real novel yet
Opening a modern Chinese novel at HSK 3 kills motivation in 10 pages. Unknown vocab density should stay under 5% for reading to feel pleasant, otherwise it's decoding, not reading.
The answer: graded readers
Stories written with a limited vocabulary, often tied to HSK. They don't replace real literature, they build the bridge to it.
- Mandarin Companion. The gold standard. Adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie in 300, 450 or 1,200 characters. Great from HSK 2.
- Chinese Breeze. From 300 words (HSK 1–2) to 4,500 words (HSK 5–6). Original stories.
- The Chairman's Bao. Short news articles graded by HSK level. Perfect for HSK 3–5.
- Du Chinese. App with hundreds of stories, audio, built-in dictionary. Generous freemium.

The 95% rule
If you don't know 95% of the vocab on a page, the book is too hard: you'll learn little and quit. Drop a level without guilt. The goal isn't to "beat" a text, it's to sustain regular reading.
