How many Chinese characters do you really need to read a newspaper, hold a conversation, or pass HSK? The numbers thrown around range from 500 to 50,000, here's the honest answer with official figures.

The main milestones, in one table

GoalCharacters
Read a menu, get around~500
Understand 90% of everyday text~1,500
Read a newspaper (97%)~2,500
HSK 6 / HSK 3.0 level 6~2,800
Average educated native~4,000–5,000
Full Kangxi dictionary~47,000

Good news: Pareto is on your side

The 1,000 most frequent characters cover 90% of any modern text. The next 2,000 add 7%, and 3,000+ more only 3%. Meaning: each character you learn early is worth far more than the ones you learn later.

Characters ≠ words

A modern Chinese word is 1 to 3 characters on average. With 2,500 characters you can form about 10,000 words by combination. That's why HSK counts words (not just characters): it's a better proxy for actual comprehension.

How long to hit 2,500?

  • At 15 new characters/day: ~6 months.
  • At 10/day: just under a year.
  • At 5/day: about 18 months.

The key factor isn't speed, it's consistency. See our SRS article for why.

Frequency order or HSK order?

Both converge at ~80%. HSK adds grammar and examples; pure frequency is ideal if you want to read fast. In practice, start with HSK 3.0 lists and pick up non-HSK characters whenever you meet real text.
