Should you learn simplified or traditional Chinese? The question hits every beginner. Short answer: start with simplified in 90% of cases, here's why, and the exceptions.

Where the two systems come from

In 1956, the People's Republic of China launched a reform to simplify ~2,235 characters to boost literacy. Result: two systems coexist today.

  • Simplified: Mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia, UN.
  • Traditional: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, diaspora.
